Do you think it is the phone or the line. If i answer on the non ringing line i can speak to the caller. Please help someone

sounds like the box on the wall - either the wires are damaged or loose.

you can safely take it off the wall and look as it isn't live. there should be 6 stripey wires 2 orange, 2 blue and 2 green.
make sure they are all securely fixed.
if they are, you may need a new box.
you can buy from an electrical shop for about 3-4.

they will have a little diagram with it so they are very easy to install.
if it helps just copy the way the original is set up

I have done this about 4 times now and never had any problems

thanks very much joko you have been a great help
I am a telephone engineer. It sounds like the bell wire which terminates across number 3 terminal inside your telephone socket has either come off or has gone faulty. If it has gone faulty, trace the cable to the next socket and the same coloured wire will be terminated on number 3 terminal at that end also. Just simply take one of the wires across number 6 terminal as they are not in use and terminate the same colour across number 3 at both ends.
er...say whut?
