To Unsubscribe or Not to Unsubscribe

I often get unsolicited junk mail. They sometimes offer a unsubscribe address. I feel that if I reply they think that they've got a genuine e-mail address and they can now send junk mail willy nilly (by the way, where did that phrase come from?) When is it not a good idea to unsubscribe (or be removed from a mailing list)?

The best idea is not to read or reply to any of these junk messages. People often send them out to millions of addresses at random, and, if you reply to unsubscribe, they know your address is active, so send even more than they did before. The best idea is to delete them from your inbox without reading them. Never bother replying to them, even with the intention of unsubscribing.

i use hotmail and you can activate the junk mail 'police' by activating the inbox protector - which cuts out a lot of unwanted emails - maybe your email account has a similar function?
