Muffled sound on computer

For the past few days, my computer (a fairly new xp) had no sound, it turned out that the speakers in my moniter were on mute (duh!!!)
When I turned mute off though, the sound was muffled and echoey, I put a different set of speakers in and the problem continued.
Hopefully someone has a solution
