I'm sure this is going to sound very silly & trivial, but does anybody know how to turn off the Microsoft "Welcome" tune?
Every time I turn on/off my laptop - it does my head in!!!

Cheers

goto start->control panel. there's an icon for sounds in there. either turn just that one off, or turn all sounds off.
Start - Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices Properties.
Click the Sounds option and scroll to the Start Windows sound. Click and then click the drop-down 'Sounds' box. Either change the sound, or at the top there is a 'None' facility.
In XP

Start - Control Panel - Sounds, speech and Audio Devices

Change the sound scheme - Sounds

You will see a long list in a box called program events

Click on the sound you no longer want - (is it twindows log on?)

In the box called sounds - choose the sound you want, or no sound (that's the first option)

Click Apply and then OK.

Likewise, turn off the Shutdown sound - also annoying (especially in meetings).

Thanks for all your answers guys,

All done now!!

Why not take a different route and change you start up/ shut down sound altogether.I cant remember exactly how it is done because I did mine a long time ago, but I now have a few seconds of one on my fave songs when I start up and shut down my laptop.Much more pleasant than the boring Windows sounds.
