Cannot renew your IP address

I've just reconfigured my Linksys WAG54Gs Wireless Gateway router, after having connectivity problems. The router's wired to my PC wich seems to be working fine. I'm trying to set up a wireless connection with my laptop, but am getting 'limited or no connectivity' because Windows cannot renew my IP address.
I've looked at various answers to similar questions on this site, but I'm afraid I don't understand them! If any kind soul can help (step-by-simple step and in words of one syllable ) I'd be grateful.

Have you tried right clicking on the wireless icon at the bottom of the laptop screen and selecting repair?

Yes, it's when I do that that I get the message saying that the connection couldn't be repaired because it couldn't renew my IP address.

I know I had to connect my laptop to the router by hardwire to configure it.

My friend Ethel! I was hoping you might be around to give me a hand with this. Unfortunately, no, the link isn't much use: I've successfully configured the router, my PC is working, but there seems to be a problem with the laptop's IP address.

Have you ever connected the laptop to the router by wire?

I've just come online on the offending laptop via the wire without any problem. I've been at this all day and am beginning to lose the will to live. I need sleep now, but will check in tomorrow to see if any further ideas are forthcoming.

But as you are now online via the laptop and the router, albeit by wire, the isp address is probably not the problem.

I had to install my internet service providers (Telewest blueyonder) installation cd on to my laptop before it would work wirelessly.

Other ideas are - firewall could be blocking access.

Click on the second icon - netset - and follow the very simple instructions. It will do it all for you.

Good morning (I have done other things this morning, not just got up, honest!).
I tried the Linksys Netset yesterday, but it didn't want to work with my connection (LAN? ISDN? Can't remember what it accused me of having). I've had a look at your other suggestion and will give it a go now. Do you know what a DHCP network is?

Well, I tried following the ipconfig/release; ipconfig/renew advice, to no avail. I've still got 'limited or no connectivity' although there's an 'excellent' signal.

Any other ideas?

Yes, Ethel, that's one of the things I neglected to say I'd tried yesterday - only it wouldn't work because I was using the wrong sort of connection (LAN? ISDN? I'm not sure).
It says it won't work when the router's already on, as it is now.

Back to basics, then.

Turn everything off, not just at the units but at the wall too.

Turn back on in this exact order:

1. Modem. Count to 10 - slowly.

2. Router. Count to 10.

3. Laptop - not wired.

Wait.

What happens?

Exactly the same message came this time, Ethel, as before. (By the way, I don't know if it makes a difference, but the Linksys WAG54S that I'm using is a modem/router, so I couldn't turn them on separately.)
I've just done the ipconfig/release and renew again. Got the message: "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected.
An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

That all sounds significant to me - but I haven't a clue what it means! Oh, and pinging my PC from the laptop doesn't work either.

Is the router compatible with the network card in your laptop?

I've been told it is. Also, when I configured the router before, the wireless connection didn't cause any trouble at all (it was the wired version that kept on failing!)
