Right click on your desktop then from the menu select, new, then folder........a folder will magically appear on your desktop.
Rename it what you want by selecting the text and typing your new name there.
Save files to it or drag and drop files into it or copy and paste files into it in the usual way..........
Do this inside other folders if you wish just follow the same principle..

I would not put folders on your desktop.
Put them in My Documents, that way all your files are in one place (within My Documents) and they are easier to find and backup.
You can always put a shortcut to the folder on your desktop, but at least the master files are in My Documents.
Folders on the desktop are held in a different place and can be hard to find when you want to back them up.

VHF.....this was merely an illustration of how to make a folder and how to put items into it, which was what henrys wanted to know...........where the folders are put was neither here nor there...folders are used all over the place and for all kinds of reasons, not merely in My Documents..........or hadn't you noticed?
commoner, I reaise that your illustration of putting the folder on the desktop was an example, but it was a bad example.
Particularly as this person was obviously fairly inexperienced. I always take into account the expericne of a person before making a reply on answerbank.
Yes, folders are used all over the place, but they are generally created in other directories when programs are installed and things like that.
But generally USER files should go into My Documents.
By keeping all USER files in My Documents it makes them easier to find and much easier to back up.
Putting user files anywhere by in My Documents is just asking for trouble.
As you problably know, in the early days of Windows there was no My Documents folder and often program files and user files were scattered all over the C drive, this made it very difficult to find your user files or do a backup.

VHF...we all work in different ways as we used to in our "all paper offices".......... I still get a new folder out on my virtual desktop....name it and then put files etc into it and THEN file it away wherever I want My Documents......Program files etc. I don't see any thing wrong in that.....it's how I like to do it. If I don't know where I put it I do as I used to do ..........search for it.
No offence but..........as the song goes...." I do it my way" <G>

I don't want to appear to take sides here, but the Desktop is the correct place to make a new folder, save an e-mail attachment etc. especially for novices. The desktop is an easy place to find from within most programs and, isn't that why there is a desktop?
When working with files which are buried deep within the 'my documents' direcory, I always copy the whole file to desktop to work with. This leaves an original copy of the files in case a serious booboo is made with the file. When finished and satisfied with the additions/alterations to the file(s) I delete the old files in the directory and relace them with the new one.
