Here are some at a PC shop near me:

If you are going to buy a CD writer why not spend a little more on a DVD writer.
I bought one a few months ago, an NEC, for about 35.
Here are some at the same shop.

There are many good makes, including NEC, Pioneer, LG, Sony, LiteOn. There is no one best "make", just lots of very good ones.
Try reading some reviews in a PC magazine.

Looks like PC Pro magazine did a review of DVD writers in the July 2006 issue.

Winner was an LG.
Consider the software you get free with it. If you buy a DVD writer you will need Nero or something like that. Can be expensive to buy it afterwards.

Providing it included reasonable software, IMHO 40-ish would be a reasonable price to pay. I think the last one I bought was a Philips, 30-something. Had it years now and it's still working well.
It's all personal preference/experience, but of those above, I wouldn't go with LiteOn or LG (had some LGs at work once, they were sh**e).
