When you follow a link to server, your browser will send a referrer header which tells the new server where you have just come from. Companies can use this information to determine how effective their advertising is working from these sites. The information isn't usually tied to you personally, but it can be if the new site prompts you for your name/email. To the best of my knowledge it is not possible to disable this from IE - but some firewalls have the ability to block Referrer headers.
