is there a way to get something on the desktop or start bar or something that lets me know if i have an email on my yahoo account, cos i dont want to have to keep goin on the website just to check, cheers

You can get Yahoo toolbar for Internet Explorer (http://toolbar.yahoo.com). There is an icon on the toolbar that indicates the number of new messages you have.

There are also applications such as POP Peeper (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/poppeeper.html) but this no longer works reliably with Yahoo since Yahoo altered their login procedure a few weeks ago.
