How can I copy text from a book

Is there a device that you can use to copy text from say a book which then lets you download it to a pc?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Any scanner will do the job. You simply need to use it in conjunction with some OCR software. (OCR = Optical Character Recognition). Most scanners are supplied with a software suite which includes an OCR program.
If you've got a scanner but no OCR software you'll probably have to pay for something suitable. (Neither download.com or tucows.com, which are the best sites for free downloads, seem to have any suitable free offerings). This program has a 15 day free trial. (if you like it, it will cost you $50 to keep it):
