What can you put on a DVD that you can't on a CD (I can do both but can only read CDs on my 'old' (2004) computer. So far I've managed to put virtually any video on CD as well as stills so wonder what the point is?

"What can you put on a DVD that you can't on a CD"

More than 6 times the information.

List of capacities:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CD (12cm) = 730 Mb
DVD (12 cm single sided, single layer) = 4.7 Gb
DVD (12 cm single sided, dual layer) = 8.5 Gb
DVD (12cm double sided, single layer) = 9.4 Gb
DVD (12cm double sided, single layer) = 17 Gb
data wise, it's just the capacity.
For PCs it doesn't really matter.
Some DVD players wont read films written onto CDs since they are in different formats to normal DVD Video.
Thank you both, I have an external dvd drive so if I run out of cd space I'll carry on and use that.
