Black screen on TV

I have a standard sized portable TV which is about 7 years old but has never been over used or abused. When I turned it on last night the screen was almost completely black on all channels, you could see outlines of things and the sound was perfect but that was it.

It is connected to a video through leads and a dvd player through a scart, and the only time I could get a clear picture was when I put the DVD player on.

It is not a problem with the brightness etc being turned up or down too far, and I can't understand how it could be a problem with the TV if the DVD picture is fine. I pulled out all the aerial leads and reconnected but nothing helped.

Has anyone any ideas as to what could be wrong or how to fix the problem?

Thanks

Need some more info here-eg is your antenna connected to your tv directly or via the VCR ?
For starters, try pressing the TV/VCR button on your VCR REMOTE or power off your VCR.

The TV is conneted to the VCR via leads and the aerial goes TV through the VCR. I connected the aerial directed to the TV and the same problem occurred.

It happens whether the VCR is on or off and none of the channels work through the VCR either.

I have been told it may be a problem with the tuner, and the reason I am getting anything at all is that there is a booster in the VCr
I think you've answered your own question when mentioning the tuner. I was reluctant to post an answer cos I've only got C&G level 2 T.V servicing which ain't much I know. A 7 year old portable T.V is only fit for the skip if presenting faults.
The scart input from your DVD player bypasses the tuner in you T.V. IF you connect your T.V to your VCR via scart you may find the VCR's tuner will give you a picture as well, just to confirm.
That T.V probably hasn't scart connectivity . Sorry if that's the case. Throw it away.
Sorry, ignore that last remark! wasn't thinking.

Thanks I got it sorted in the end. Apparently the DVD player being on standby rather than off was causing it! Dont understand why though as it has always been on standby and this problem only occurred in the last week!
