If you just want a forum, hopefully you'll hardly need to even look at the mySQL stuff.

Try something like this:

http://www.phpbb.com/

thanks fo3nix I have looked into various ppbb forums and have acually had one on the site for a few months. It has not been very satisfactory and after it was closed for upgrading to a new data center last week the link from my site is not working and requests for help get an automated reply saying they will respond but that is all. I was wondering if there was a better way. I will have a more thorough look at your suggested website to see if I can resolve my problems from there
I'm not sure I understand the data centre problem...

I assume you've downloaded the phpbb code and set it up on your own website, uploaded it etc., and you had a problem with your own host moving data centres, and since then it hasn't worked?

Thanks again fo3nix - fortunately today my link from website to forum is working again.
However, reading your latest reply I am not at all sure that I have set it up correctly. All I did was hyperlink from web page to forum as far as I remember. I don't recall downloading phpbb code etc. Have I not done it correctly?
I received an email last Saturday stating the forum would not be available for a few hours from 1.00pm because all servers were being moved to a new datacenter. Perhaps this period had to be extended because several days later I was unable to reach it!
phpbb is just a lot of different files that you download yourself to upload to your own website, so that you can have your own forums on your site, completely personal to you.

if you download and set this up, then you won't have to deal with phpbb for any server problems.
