When I start up my PC there is an extremely loud noise, like the fan is spinning far to fast. This lasts until boot up has fininshed and then it returns to a normal, quiet hum. This noise is very unpleasant and I am concerned it could be doing long term damage to the computer. I am running Win98SE on an Athlon XP 2400. Any ideas? Thanks.

CPU fan needs replacing.
Could there be a cd in your rom drive and it is reading it thus the loud noise....I had a one and it was really noisey when it read cdroms.
2nd opinion definitely CPU fan as j2b responds (caused by old/faulty fan which doesn't spin true in the frame anymore) - long term damage no, until the fan stops working, then overheating CPU is imminent - fans are cheap to replace (fiver on ebay) and not rocket science to fit so can be done yourself, so best do it now
