Try doing a virus check with this free antivirus trial: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_trial.php
You don't use Kazaa or anything do you? The temp file rapidly take up disk space.
Sometimes the reported free space can be out of synch with the real thing because of dirty shut downs and crashes.

Norton Utilities Disc Doctor can sort this and do much more tidying and tuning up of the disc. It's the best 35 you'll spend beyond the anti-virus. PC World sometimes bundle the two together for a reduced price. What a bargain!
