Gif documents

All my .gif extention files are using MS DOS to open so obviously I can't view any pictures. How do I change which programme a type of file uses to open and which programme should I use to get my gif images to be animated (it used to use Photoed, but it only shows still images).

I'm at work, so this may be a bit sketchy. Dependent on which version of Windows your'e using (if any), click on either View or Tools menu in a window of your choice. Then select Folder options. A new window will open, you need to select the third 'tab' at the top of it. File Types, I think it's called. If you scroll down to the GIF extension and select it, you should be able to change the program that is used :o) hope this helps

If you've not sorted it then tell us what operating system you're running and we can give precise instructions.

For animated gifs, one way to preview what they look like (assuming no better program exists) is to right click the file, scroll across from "Open With >" and then choose Internet Explorer as the program to open the .gif with.

Thank you all for your answers, but it's still not happening! I tryed what shybearuk suggested and I go to the File Type tab, select GIF image and it says that it opens with Photoed and the content type is '(MIME): application/hta' which I'm not sure what that means... When I double click to open a GIF file it opens a MS DOS window which says C:\WINNT\system32\qbasic.exe and gives me a bunch of ilegible characters. I tryed right clicking on it but it doesn't give me an 'open with' option. On my colleague's machine GIF images open with Quick Time and seam to work fine. My operating system is Windows NT.
