When I update my Windows XP using windows update, I keep getting an error message saying that Dahotfix has encountered an error. Myupdates frequently fail because of this. Can anybody help please?

A workaround is to download the updates then install them seperately (this has worked for stubborn updates in the past). Go to windows updates > scan for updates then write down the ones that don't work. Under "Other Options" in the main menu > Personalise Windows Update > tick the "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also" box then "Save Settings" > you now have "Windows Update Catalog" under the "See Also" menu on the main page, click this > Find updates for Microsoft..." > Windows XP SP1 > critical updates and service packs > find the ones you wrote down > add to you basket > download to your hard drive > install. BTW, was it the MDAC security fix it fails on? Here is a Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823718

Thanks for taking the time to post your detailed reply. I followed your instructions to the letter, but unfortunately I still keep getting the dahotfix error. On:- 821557: Security Update (Windows XP) and Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (823718). I also have a laptop networked with my computer and that is OK with all updates working fine. I also have Norton Antivirus and that reports no viruses. Short of formatting my drive and reinstalling XP, any more suggestions?
