Pasting from a letter?

I am getting mail (snailmail) from France, and have to translate it. If I type it into word, I can copy & paste it to the translator. The problem is, I would like to copy from the scan. Any sugestions please? Thank you in advance.

Most decent scanners include OCR (optical character recognition) software in the bundle. Some of it is very good indeed.

For example, I have Omnipage SE from ScanSoft.

However, if the letter is handwritten I don't think you'll have much luck.
