If it is on a new PC which you plan to buy then go ahead, but if you currently run XP DONT bother to upgrade.
There are all sorts of issues with upgrading, such as missing drivers, some software that does not work, and overall you dont gain a great deal.
IF you are keen to upgrade then wait six months until a lot of the problems have been sorted out.
Oh, and you will probably need a more powerful PC, and a more powerful graphics card, to take full advantage of Vista.

Managed to get Windows Vista Premium off Ebay (wouldn't pay shop prices for it) and I reckon the XP Professional I "upgraded " from was faster and better. Vista looks nice but a lot of the software that was compatible with XP isn't with Vista. If you're lucky you can download software drivers from the Net.It's early days for me yet and I may grow into but at present I agree with vehelpfuyguy-unless you get a new computer with Vista installed, it's not worth the extra money for the minimal extra benefits.
Vista is a complete re-write by Microsoft of it's Operating System. In the long run it will undoubtedly be an improvement, but as with moving to any new OS, it will cause you a lot of grief. Apple did a re-write of its OS about 6 years ago, and Apple OS X (ten) will do anything Vista can do, and a lot more besides. And is very stable and secure.
If you are seriously going to change Operating Systems OS X is worth a look.
Here is a film someone put on uTube of the soundtrack to what VISTA will be able to do, and the visual is of someone doing that operation in Apple OS X.
