My Norton keeps coming up with a message that a programme is trying to access the internet with an echo request. I block this every time but it keeps on coming. What can I do to get rid of this? Any help appreciated. I had this a while ago and it was making my computer crash all the time.

Does norten tell you what program this is coming from?
An echo request is like shouting hello and waiting for a hello back.
I don't think it anything bad but i could be wrong.
By 'norten' do you mean firewall or is the antivirus picking it up?

It's the firewall and they are ICMP echo requests, it doesn't say what programme it is and I don't know how to fond out. Thanks for your reply.
Google ICMP requests. I'm pretty sure its just your computer talking to the router or vise versa. If so you don't have a problem, just make sure your AV and malware products are up to date and let it run.
Believe it or not i've got an exam on network security tomorrow. ICMP requests can be a problem, but more than likely aren't. Scan you system with your AV and something like adaware (free download, google it). Is your machine on a LAN or wireless network?
Worst case scenario is that someone is trying to conduct a denial of service attack on someone else. Is NOT anything to do with pinching your credit card details.
