For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I'm assuming you are referring to the marks that publishers/printers put into the text of a book to indicate that there is a footnote about the word preceding the mark. The reader must then look at the bottom of the page to discover what they are trying to draw his/her attention to...eg a word's obsoleteness.
Different publishers and different organisations use different sequences for footnote-symbols. Here is one such sequence: asterisk *, dagger ', double dagger ', section mark �, paragraph mark �, double vertical lines II, double asterisks **, double double daggers ''. If those are not what you wanted, I apologise for wasting your time.
