Can't get webcam to work on video call

I am using a Logitech webcam and Windows messenger live and when I connect to a video call there is no webcam image. The camera is working fine.
But within the software I have noticed the 'select video software' is greyed out and I can't select it.
Is this the problem and how can I fix it?
