What is happening? Can the laptop 'see' the router?

Yeah need more info on this one. Firstly is your Laptop's Wireless Adapter enabled? Quick way of checking is your system tray (Bottom right hand corner of your screen) , see if there is an icon of a computer emitting three curves. Chances are that its not.

If its not press the "Windows" button and the "Pause/ Break" button @ the same time. This will give you "System properties". Click on the "Hardware" tab then "Device Manager"

Look for "Network Adapter" exand the icon then make sure your wireless adapter is enabled. If you need more help check websites on the net there is some great advise out there.
I believe some laptops have a little switch on the side of the laptop somewhere, which you have to turn on for the wireless to work.
All laptops have a wifi switch - on my acer it looks like a small light on the very front of the laptop - you can see it even with the lid closed. It's next to the headphone sockets.
Ethel: not all. Mine certainly doesn't :)
If it's a Dell you can toggle the wireless on and off by pressing F2 to turn it on but I can't remember what it is to turn it off again, your manual will tell you.
My Acer doesn't have a switch Ethel but can be enabled in Control Panel > Network connections> right click then enable
Fiesata - click the narrow oblong orange light next to your headphone jacks. The one that lights up when you are online.

You have to press it quite hard.
i have a fujitsu v5535 i cant find my switch either
