Daft question but, as I am about to change my ISP, how would I know if my laptop were wireless enabled? Many thanks.

To check if your computer is wireless-enabled go to Start, then Control Panel and double click on Network Connections. If your computer is wireless enabled you'll see available wireless connections in your area. (Thanks to PC World)

Excellent, thank you so much for that. As you can probably tell, I am "pc-phobic!"
That only works if your wifi is turned on. All laptops have the ability to turn the wireless on and off.

If you have the Windows key on your keyboard, press that and the pause/break key.

Now click hardware and device manager

Scroll down to 'network adapters'. If you see something with 'wireless' your laptop is wifi enabled,
