transferring files

I have an old computer, a Toshiba laptop, that is just jam-packed full of music that I'd like to transfer to my new computer. The old one is running Windows 98, and the new one XP. They both have USB ports and they both have serial ports, but WIndows XP Connection Wizard doesn't recognise the USB port, and Direct Cable Connection doesn't recognise the laptop's USB either. How could I get them to recognise the ports, and even if I did, would they be able to talk to each other? I can't set up a network or aything, because the laptop doesn't have a modem or network card, so it has to be a direct connection. I would be extremely grateful if someone could help!
