AOL and Vista prob with broadband
I recently purchased an Acer laptop with Windows Vista.
My existing AOL broadband connection wouldn't work on it. AOL suggested wireless and sent me a netgear modem router but it still wont connect. Their 'technical support' line advised that windows haven't advised them of the correct info for Vista so they wont help me with it yet. This could take a few months.
Does anyone know how I can get it to work before then???
Any help much appreciated.

Ma previous laptop crashed so I got one wi Vista. I kept getting conflicting advice but in the end I bought a netgear router and rang AOL and they took me through the installation. I phoned AOL from the shop when I was buying the router and AOL telt me not to use the disc that comes wi the router because that causes problems. If I were you, I'd ring them again and tell them that you know someone who has been able to ring them and get the same router installed
Thanks Alf - I am using AOL 9.0 VR and have tried un installing and re installing it with different cds as I have three from AOL now! I may well try downloading from your link as well though but I can't do that from home on this dodgy old pc!
Thanks Corbyloon - it's good to know someone perservered and got there. If the above doesn' t work I'll ring them again (which involves a lot of time and patience as I'm sure you know!).
I did receive a reply from ebuyer who said it's not their problem and according to the AOL tech site all I have to do is click on AOL select system information/ click connectivity and reset locations - but that doesn't work either!
Hopefully I'll get there one way or another...
Just a thought, have you tried after uninstalling the old modem drivers as they state this can cause problems. I have a netgear router supplied by aol have installed it wired to my main desktop & added the lap top using a wire then enabled it wireless using the cd they provided. The only problem I encounterd was that I didnt know you had to use 9.0 vr with vista. once downloaded all was well.
After a couple of weeks of faffing about I found someone on a similar site who'd had the same problem. Hope he won't mind me repeating this - he seemed happy to share it with anyone.
"firstly do u have the vista ready disc for aol setup, if not and you are running vista download it from aol, at aol setup does not recognise your internal wireless adapter , dont worry this is no prob, remove your current network via the start tab at the bottom left corner, goto connect to , the networks you have will show up , remove it so that no networks are present, now close these windows, now reinstall aol vista ready setup disc, u will get the same response as b4 but this will setup your rooter again, at the end you will see the same thing as before , and that is that your network adapter may not be compatible, close the aol setup and plug in your yellow broadband cable and go online , goto http;//192.168.0.1(fr netgear) thats your rooter settings it should be at the bottom of your rooter, click on wireless scrool down and copy your wep key now log out, go offline and UNPLUG your yellow cable, goto "connect to" again the new network you setup with aol disc will be there again right hand click it it will show properties click it , then goto security, now you will see a wep key or as vista calls it network key paste in the the key you copied from your rooter settings page, now you might see that you have limited access for your network , do the same again that is paste in your copied key, now you will see that you have a wirelees connection that is security enabled , thats it , now i know this seems alot but trust it works. i have had many people mail me and this has fixed there prob, AOL offer no solution , nor did changing the rooter channel , security settings ip ad, or anything else till i did this"
ps re the wep bit i did have to put in a password (I just made one up eg gerbil) then it gave me 4 wep numbers and i copied the first one.
