Hotmail attachments

Please help. I can't open up any files sent to my hotmail account, it just says 'windows cannot open this file' - and then prompts me to look through a list of websites that have suitable software. Why is this happening? Is there something easy I can do without having to pay for a specil download? It's happening with jpeg and bmp files to name a few. I'm useless with this kind of thing so any advice wold be greatly appreciated!

Click on My Documents then on the Tools tab at the top then Folder Options then File Types and scroll down the list.
Both of those jpeg and bmp should be opened by Wndows Picture Viewer. If not click on them in turn and select Change. You can choose a suitable program there.
