photograph sizes

I need a photograph of myself for a forum, but my photo was too large. I cropped it, but it was still too large. I copied it onto Microsoft Word where I reduced the size of it. I then copied the reduced size photo onto the desktop. When I went back to the forum to upload it, it said that my photo was invalid (probably because it wasn't JPEG or whatever).

Can you give me some advice about re-sizing my photo please?

Have you tried the image resizer right click powertoy from microsoft. i find this usually does the job for things like that.
