I've been sending photos to a friend via hotmail, and they are saying they are too big!! Typically they are 325kb saved as jpegs. I use the software supplied with my camera - Nikon Browser and Nikon View, I've tried saving as tif and bmp, but it just seems to increase the file size. How can I make them smaller??

Sending pics by e-mail the size should be kept to 100kb in jpeg format (tif and bmp aren't usually suitable) - or under is best, especially if you want to keep your friends ;-)

I've about six different types of photo software but the one I use the most (and it's also the simplest) is Freeware called IrfanView. It's absolutely brilliant and re-sizing to below the target 100kb is a breeze. If you want to try it here's the link:

try altering the actual dimensions of the photograph as well, as long as you daont make them too small they can be enlarged at the other again if necessary. You may also have a colours option where you should change it down from hundreds of thousands of colours to something like 500
