my iPod doesnt work?

i just got this used iPod. when i first got it , it was dead so i charged it. then i took it off the charger to test it. it worked properly on the dock that i have. so, then i plugged it back up to my computer to erase and re-sync songs on the device. when i plugged it up i formatted it and then it just stopped working. it kept saying do not disconect and then it froze. i was afraid that the frozen ipod would damage my computer so i disconected it anyway. the device then went to a menu startup mode. and then it went to disk mode. now ive tryed to restart it by pushing menu and play/pause and it tries to start up but it doesnt. the apple icon comes up and then keeps fading away while at the sametime you could hear peices inside the device spinning. how do i get my device to work properly?
