I seem to remember there is something that you must not place on top of stereo speakers, because there is some sort of magnet in them.
Is it CDs or DVDs?

Or video cassettes?

Or am I completely muddled up with something entirely different?

Speakers contain very strong magnets - I'd avoid storing any magnetic tape on them, incl video cassettes.
Yes, it's videos and audio casettes that you should keep well away from speakers. CDs and DVDs store their data optically and aren't affected by magnets. You should keep these away from direct sunlight esp. CDr and DVDr/rws.
I seem to recall that ones with strong magnets could affect the old crt monitors if placed too close - don`t know about the new tft ones, I have seen both types with speakers intergrated from new, but wether they were heavily shielded or weak I cannot say. Audio cassettes don`t like magnets either.
Credit/Bank cards shouldn't be put on Speakers either. It fubar's the magnetic strip on the back.
