Just bought a Lap top with WindowsXP. Works perfectly when ADSL/Router is connected, but when it goes "wireless" it only finds the signal from router occasionally. Varying from no signal at all to strong signal, but mainly no signal at all. Fn+F2 button does nothing to the problem. Ideas please

use a cable.

when you say good to poor .... in the same room, same position ... or what

where is the router positioned? .... what brand
what's between laptop and router (straight line)
Question Author
Thanks for your quick reply. Same room, same postion, 3metres from router. Nothing between laptop &router.
Router is SweexMO2521. My other laptop is in same room, but not in straight line between router and new laptop.
Good to poor to NO coneection in same room.
To use a cable would defeat the object of having a router.
ThanksAC
"To use a cable would defeat the object of having a router."
I take it you mean defeat the object of having a wireless router anyway are you sure your problem laptop is connecting to your router and not a neighbors?
Question Author
Good point Mattie, but we live in the country& neighbours sre a long way away. It would seem that the problem might be malfunction of the Fn &F2 keys, as sometimes they will connect bit othertimes will not. Comments please.
can't find any mention of your router

If you're using in the same room as the router ... I don't see why wireless (personally I hate wireless esp as I use NAS hdds and the transfer rate for wifi is bad ... even when it's good) - and two in the same room will cause conflicts - esp if transferring files.

in the field ...wireless is very lucrative for visiting tekkies ... (which shows how bad it is)

anyway lol ... back to you.

I assume FnF2 is your lappys wireless hotkey ... do you have a physical switch?
I tend to enable/disable the adapter on the sys tray rather than switch on or off(yes I use it when I have to - but my house is wired)

is there a rate setting in the setup of lappy and router?
(compatibility mode?)
often there is an option to use 802.11b (11Mb/s) or 802.11n (54Mb/sec) .... if it's just for you - and both (all) your machines are "n" .... switch compatibility off (I assume you're not sitting in a field next to a reactor ... under the high power lines?)

Question Author
Thanks guys& to AC,the thought of me sitting naked in a field under high power lines next to a reactor, has concentrated my mind& I have sorted the problem. The function buttons are the key (no pun intended),as when Fn&then F2 are pressed, one has to wait 45secs to a minute before the Laptop picks up the router signals. Problem due to my impatience.
