The BT Light User scheme was introduced (well before the internet was conceived) after considerable pressure from various bodies who campaigned to ensure that, for example, elderly and infirm people should be able to contact a doctor (or the emergency services) without having to pay a high line rental cost for a phone which they hardly ever used.
Understandably, BT try to ensure that they only offer the service to customers who only make light use of their phone line (whether that be for voice calls or for data transmission). i.e. they believe that it's unreasonable to offer a 'light user' concession (as they see it) to someone whose phone line is permanently capable of handling data transmission.
You can interpret that as 'bloody-mindedness' but it does have a certain commercial logic to it. (There's certainly no technical reason why you can't have a broadband connection).
b.t. cap it,if your with aol ect. you can have 2meg b/b but until
you go on option 1 [ �33-quarter] it will only run at 512kbs. which is no good for video clips ect.i found a few posts that
say after 3 bills [9mounths] b.t. drop the charge to �27 but
b.t. say this is not true.if your upgrading with aol beware, they always say UP-TO 8meg, get you in an 18 month contract,then put a 10gig download limit on you .AOL now car phone whoore house.

i was BT light user in my last house, cant remember what i was paying now, but when i moved last year, i switched to Virgin Telewest because i got a computer and so broadband. i found them a good deal. �20 per mth, gets me phone with landline calls, broadband, and freeview.
check out other deals, but be careful some like sky, you still need ta pay for a BT line, on top of their charges.
I have a BT InContact Line and took out Broadband before BT changed the terms and conditions of service to exclude InContact Lines and Light User Schemes from having Broadband, I have migrated about 5 times over the years from SP to SP using Mac Codes, sometimes with problems, but the worst that happens is I have to insisit with the SP that they push things with BT Wholesale, on the point that if I had Broadband before on this line why shouldn't I have it now. I would also add as an ex-employee of BT I know that the problem is solely in the way the order is inputted for providing a telephone line, in other words they merely put a order code that rejects Broadband orders on the line. It is sheer blodie mindness on BT's part.
