Hypertext as used here on the web came into being because Tim Berners Lee proposed it and did the initial coding. But he didn't invent the name or the theories behind it. Those date way back before computers and the internet.

Hypertext is the ability to click on a link and be shown another piece of information without having to know the name of the file or its location - which can be anywhere.
