Not Altered Images, but Icons...
2 Answers
It's hardly earth-shattering, but it is quite irritating
Turned on the PC just now, wanted to change the Wallpaper & noticed that all the JPG files I've saved have had their icons changed from the usual "red + pencil" (?) to the blue Internet Explorer "e", while all the '.bmp' files were changed to the "Windows symbol" icon!? (I changed those back using "Open withPaint".)
Also, placing the cursor on the titles in a folder used to show a thumbnail picture, but that no longer happens & every picture now opens in a small window when they previously opened fully "stretched".
I've no idea what opened JPG's when they were red, but clicking "Properties" shows that they're "Opened with" Explorer was that always the case? How is the icon change explained & can I change them back?
Nothing new downloaded (picture of a cat on Friday, but ok then), Spybot & AdAware run clean, nothing else seems to be amiss on my PC which is running - don't laugh! - Windows 2000 (SP4)
I suppose I've done something without realising it, so with apologies for being stupid, I thank you for your time & consideration

to revert to your old icons, right click> options> open with> and tick the box which says, always open these images with this program. and hey presto, your old icons should return.

Thanks for the reply fivetoze, sorry for taking so long to get back!
Doesn't work, I'm afraid! Explorer insists on using its own icon - I put in a disk I've not touched for 3 years & the icons instantly changed to the blue "e"!
I've been into Tools > "Folder Options" > "File Types" (where you should be able to change the opening program & icon), but the "Apply" button is non-functional?!
Saving with Photofiltre uses the Explorer icon
