Electric fans - too fast?

I have two pedestal fans at home, and used a couple of desk fans at work. On all of them, the slowest speed setting is way too fast. Do other answerbankers agree? I just want a pleasant gentle breeze, and all I can get is a gale. Does anyone know of a make or model that has a really slow setting?

I agree: they DO tend to run too fast, especially for home use. I use different models at home and work and get the same problem.
So, here's my scheme:
By a USA voltage adapter and power it through that. Voltage cut in half, therefore, fan speed cut in half :)
At least, that's my theory...

Thanks, all. I've bought a tower fan, and it does seem a bit slower and quieter than the regular propellor types. It does have two faster speeds - I guess I'll never use them. The idea of moving the fan further away is good, but limited by the length of cable and the position of sockets, though I could use an extension lead I suppose. But, still, why don't they make them to go slower?
