i've reinstalled xp home edtion using complete recovery in stead of using just clean c drive, as a result i cant download sp2, when using clean c drive i've never had a problem before,has anybody had the same probem.

Service pack 3 rolls up all previous updates so you don't actually need service pack 2 - just 3.

i've tried but update wont let me, it says it recommend sp2 and when i download it stops on checking product key.

I did a clean install of XP recently & had problems with some of the updates, not SP2 but ones after that . I was led to this http://www.autopatcher.com/ which did the job .

finally installed sp2,i got in contact with microsoft they took me through it,in the end it was a corrupted product key.
