Who actually makes our TV's?
7 Answers
There are quite a few makes of televisions now on the market but my husband tells me that there are only a few companies that actually make them now. So when people turn their nose up at brand names such as Technika, Matsui, JVC - do one of the leading brands like Sony, Panasonic. Phillips etc make them? I would like to know who makes the cheaper TV's that the supermarkets tend to sell!!

..... almost
there are a (very) few manufacturers
who pretty much make 'em all
BUT there are many grades of electronics.
military grade lasts for ever .... (not quite ... but along long time)
gold - is pretty indestructible
silver 'ain't bad
straight will probably be ok
and then there's economy.....
remember it's all relative ....
economy will almost certainly get to the end of the guarantee .... it might last 20 years ....
a telly also uses software ... my tosh is slick and easy to use - my ikkle portable ... was cheap ... and the menus are totally liiogical ... and the program guide is rubbish .... but I only watch it for 10 mins work mornings and half an hour or so sat sunday
given that we are more wrapped up with the fashion value of many gadgets and people "get bored" with their mobiles ... buy every model of iPod - just because it's "cool" - and admittedly technology does move at a fearful rate....
I suppose you need to ask yourself - do you want it to last forever?
for me it's as important to like the look of a telly picture (after all it's sort of the point!!!)
the book says panasonic ... but I got a toshiba because I liked the picture better ....

The executives of JVC wouldn't be pleased to see you including them among the 'cheapo' brands. They're Japan's longest established manufacturer of TVs and well-respected for their innovations. (They invented the VHS video recorder). JVC is part of ********** and thus tied in with such well-respected brands as Panasonic and Technics.
When a company like DSG International (which owns Currys, Dixons, PC World, etc) are seeking to source their 'own brand' TVs, they'll look for the best deal for each model. So they might get an LCD TV from one manufacturer and a plasma TV from another. But both will be branded 'Matsui'.
Similarly, WalMart/Asda may use several different companies for their 'Durabrand' products.
Likewise Comet (Pro-Line) and Tesco (Technika).
Initial Technology is a major supplier to such companies:

Samsung and LG-Phillips manufacture about 90% of the worlds LCD panels (Screens). So chances are if you have a TV badged as another make, you are actually looking at a Samsung or LG.
There is more to TVs than just the screen panels. The electronics behind it also have a bearing, so even though two screens may be identical, the picture and usability of your TV can be different.
