CD / DVD drive Failure

My PC has crashed with a prompt to reinstall Windows via the original CD Rom and repair. However both CD and DVD drives come up as failure. What do I do? What is the problem?

It happened to me recently and I had to get a boot disc reinstall everything. It worked but I'm not an exper. Before it crashed though I was also told to make a note of all my drivers and copy all my drivers - you can download them afterwards I think. Hope this sort of helps
