Phone memory

My mobile occasionally says it doesnt have enough memory to perform a function and I need to close applications to carry on.
Ive no idea what this means as to my knowledge I dont have any applications open!
Its a Nokia N73 from Three, I have about 1500 texts, maybe 100 contacts, 1 photo and about 2 short video clips and 2 songs. Do I need to buy a memory upgrade if I want to keep the texts? Or is it a glich?
Any advice welcome - I dont understand mobiles, just a functional item for me!

The phone memory is not that large - really only meant as a secondary memory - hence the memory cards.
There's a slot for a memory card either top or bottom on that handset.
