Prosthetic eye ?
4 Answers
Following an accident on new years eve, our 17 year old son has lost the sight in his right eye. The specialist has stated that due to the damage done, there is no chance of vision returning. He has informed us of the dangers regarding infection spreading to the remaining good eye, and seems keen on our son looking toward a prosthetic replacement. The specialist said that the white of the eye can remain, and it is only the centre that is replaced. What I would like to know is, are the prosthetic eyes available on the national health of a good standard, or, should we look to a private company for the best result? We are not wealthy poeple, but for the sake of his personal confidence I would cover the expense some how. Any extra advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If it were me, before going ahead with surgery to remove his eye, I would go somewhere else for a second opinion. You just never know.
I would probably do as campbell has suggested & contact Moorfields in London, although the consultant/s your son has already seen, may very well be as good as the consultants there.
Good luck to your son & take care.
P.S. My nephew had an accident with a sharp stick (playing around with a friend) when he was 12 years old & nearly lost his eye. They managed to save his sight, but a part of the Iris is now black instead of blue.
