computer question

I'm definitely not good with computers and don't really understand all the technical jargon so bear with me please. I've received an email with two attachments from a trusted source. The first one I opened with no problem (Adobe) however the second gave me a message saying 'This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action.' Create an association in the folders option. Now I took this to mean Adobe wasn't able to open this. So, went into folders options and am given 4 tabs to choose from. General ,view, file types and offline files. Can't work out what I'm to do - please can someone explain (treat me like the idiot I am and assume I know absolutely nothing. Many thanks

The second one is completely different - a white square with grey surround - top left corner turned in and a little T V screen like thing inside is a stripe across the top below this a red shape (left hand side )and a different blue shape (right han side) followed by untitled-square brackets with 1.2 inside then (6.03KB) - have also followed ajmmac's suggestion and still no luck. Looks like the old folks home for me tomorrow.
