We live in a huge house and our daughter disappears for hours on end to use MSN and Bebo etc on her own PC in her bedroom.
The living room PC is connected to the internet via an ethernet cable which fits into a Belkin Wireless/Modem Router. My daughter picks up her internet connection wirelessly from the same router.
We don't know if this is feasible, but we were wondering if we could somehow communicate in real time with our daughters PC via the modem router for purposes such as telling her when her food was ready via text for example. We were thinking in terms of something like a pop-up that would appear on her PC screen.
As we set up the modem/router ourselves, we have all the security passwords needed etc for both PC's.
Is such an idea really feasible and would it need any type of software installed on both computers?

Thanks.

errr...Create your own MSN account!!
MSN, or Skype, both have free instant messaging. I truthfully have married friends who seem only communicate with each other via Skype, even when they are in the same room. :)

Skype is my preference.

As your daughter has MSN you will probably be better with that.

Thanks both. I think MSN might be the way forward as I've not got a second webcam right now.

Is there anything else that could be done apart from Skype or MSN?

Thanks
Social commentary - I read it ... I understand it .... but (to quote meldrew I DON't BELIEVE IT.

I actually printed this one out ... and showed a few people last night ... you could hear the jaws dropping at 20 paces ...

you could probably get someone to write a small prog so then you only need move a single finger

but one (easy) answer would be the command line - net send
the other is to use the computer management console
action | all tasks | send console message

ACtheTROLLso what were the jaws dropping most about, the question or some of the answers?

Anyhow, I've just a quick shifty on the web to look up net send and console message. It seems neither work in vista home premium, which is what I'm using.

This can't be rocket science for goodness sake, So what's the answer. Is there a program out there apart from MSN and Skype that would do the job.

And before someone asks, yes, I could phone her on the internal phone we have, but teenagers being what they just consider a phone a distraction. A message is right in your face.

the question ... mainly.... actually 100%

a quick shifty (?) ...

they both work for me
I had a bit of a look .... and both work for others also

There are loads of messenger programs that would do it... Googletalk, AIM and skype are just a few

But Why do you want a program other than MSN? as your daughter already uses MSN, it's free, and you almost certainly have it installed already then surely your easiest option is to simply create your self a MSN account and add your daughter as a buddy so you can use that to send her messages!
