was going to say you've slightly misunderstood what an SLR is

SLR = SINGLE LENS reflex (forget the last bit

normally when buying a SLR you buy the body (the clicky bit
and then 1 or more lenses as and when required

so a wide angle ... standard and zoom (which is all the same and just a button on a compact) is actually 3 different lenses (costing 100s of squids)
I've got one something like this

http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/1258590/ index.html

Lighter than an SLR and with built-in lens but huge zoom (28-504 in old money). SLRs give a somewhat better picture but are heavier and dearer.
I agree with jno. the panasonic is a fantastic camera. I do have a SLR a Nikon D40 with two lenses which use all the time. The total zoom capacity with teh two lenses combined is approx. x10. I have previously used a bridge digital camera, a fuji finepix 4900 which again was excellent and in now my backup camera. This had a 6x optical zoom with 10x digital. I have not gained zoom capability with the switch to SLR but wanted a SLR to give me more flexibility with creative photography. If all you want is zoom the panasonic will do this, but if you want more manual control go with a SLR.
