How can I transfer files from "my documents" in my desk top to my new Laptop, I need the files on both my desktop and laptop.

Easiest way is to either

1) On the dekstop copy the files to a CD or DVD, then move the CD or DVD to your laptop and copy the files onto the laptop.

2) Buy a USB memory stick and then copy the files from the desktop to the memory stick, then put the memory stick in the laptop and copy the files onto the laptop.

There are other ways such us uploading the files to an online storage web site, then download them to you laptop.

Also you can connect the computers together in a simple network (via a router) and copy the files direct from one computer to another.

But the first 2 options are the easiest.

if you intend to edit the file (s) using either machine
you are making a rod for your own back.

you need a common share ... and only one copy

I have a nas which contains my files
and each machine is mapped to the folder ...
if you needs a working copy on your laptop ...
google SyncToy v2.0 and download it from the microsoft site.

Agree with AC totally....

too much of my working life is spent trying to deal with problems caused by people having multiple copies of the same file in different places!

You make one "master" copy of the files then either use synctoy or from a novice point of view use windows offline files ( though I hate them for a few reasons you should never encounter!!) to keep your "remote" copy of the files updated.
