Opening Attachments

I always manage to successfully open e-mail attachments, but when I've tried to open the last couple via W. Microsoft Word, it just shows gobbledegook! I can't remember what settings I had to adjust before when this happened. Could anyone assist please?

I rarely usr Word, but whenever this happens to me I just oen MS Word first and then open the attatchment.There is bound to be an easier way and I am sure someone will give you a better answer shortly.
