How do you replace a idle control motor stepper motor on a saxo and were could I got one?

Hello Saxo,

I can only speak of my experience with a normally aspirated Vauxhall engine, ie, carburettor model not injection. The idle control stepper motor is fitted to the side of the carburettor with a lead attached by a plug. It does what the name suggests and, together with the temperature sensor, controls the engine idle speed. If the idle control stepper motor fails, the engine won't idle smoothly and an engine management warning light will probably appear on the dash. Importantly, it will fail the MOT as the emissions test requires the engine to idle consistently for accurate measurement. The stepper motor must be therefore be replaced. I was quoted �125 for a new one from the main dealer. As this was a 1993 car, I was extremely reluctant to pay this. Instead, a local vehicle breaker (Yellow Pages) supplied me with a whole carburettor, with the stepper motor fitted for �15. Fitting was really quite easy. If you can find a breaker who has the right carb for your engine size / year of manufacture, this might be your best bet. Grab hold of a Haynes manual (�10-ish), or check your local library copy to see how easy the job is. Good luck.
