in M/S word how can i fill an A4 with a single letter, eg. a large "E" i cant get rid of the space at the top of the sheet

You could try making your margins shorter.

Thanks squarebear, that sounds the easiest solution but i set zero margins, no joy, so i messed about with the indent and spacing in the end
before typing the letter as "E ". increase the font size in the msword.

you will get the large icon om the screen.
The space around the content in Word depends on several factors.

1. The Margins which are found in Page Setup.

2. The Borders, also in page setup and duplicated by the sliders on the ruler in the case of the side borders.

3. The Paragraph Formatting which includes Before and After settings. This sounds like your problem.

If you set all these to zero the character will abut the top of the page. Increase the font to make it reach the bottom.

However your printer may not be able to reproduce the onscreen appearance.
