How to convert CDA files to MP3 (or Wav/Wma/Vorbis/Flac) with FreeRIP
The first thing you must know is .CDA files are not audio files, they are just a way that Windows uses to let you access an Audio CD index. When I say that they are not audio files, I mean that they do not contain sampled sound at all! This means that you cannot convert them to another format (such like MP3), simply because they do not contain audio samples! This is why if you copy a .CDA file to our hard drive and try to play it with an audio player, nothing happens. And this is why you need FreeRIP to extract audio tracks from an Audio CD.
To extract audio tracks from an Audio CD to MP3 (or another supported format) use FreeRIP as described here in FreeRIP user manual.
If you copied some .CDA file to your hard drive or to a different media.....sorry, you can't convert them to MP3 format. You will need to find the original CD and rip its tracks with FreeRIP.

Oh thank you shiznit - but I'm hopeless at understanding these things. If I google FreeRip - do you think that might work? The recorded CD is of my son's own music, and someone's shown interest in it. I wanted to let them listen to just one track, but as I say - nothing happens at all. I thought I'd done something wrong when transferring the stuff to my files. I'm afraid I need the most simple of instructions in order to do anything like this!!! : )
Well I think that iTunes is so easy, if you haven't got it, it is a free download from Apple. Then all you need to do is insert the cd, it will appear in the sidebar of iTunes, it will probably be called untitled cd, as it is not a pre recorded album and therefore will not be in the CDDB. That is just a data base that has track names for cd's, when you load a bought or copied cd iTunes will get all the track names automatically. Anyway that does not matter here, if you click on the untitled cd in the main window of iTunes there will be the tracks on the cd, at the bottom there should be an "import cd" tab, I'm on a Mac so it mightbe slightly different on a PC. Click import and then once it has done, you should be able to just find the mp3 file in your home music folder. Let me know if you need anymore info.
Good luck
