wireless connection

I don't know much about the technical stuff with computers. I have 2 laptops and 1 desktop pc and a virgin broadband connection. I bought a TP-Link TL-WR641G wireless router and I can link it to my desktop as long as I use a LAN connection but neither laptop can detect the signal. They are both wireless enabled and I keep picking up signals from other networks so they are working ok but I cannot get anywhere with my own connection. Can somebody please talk me through setting up - using only idiotproof terms? thanks

I've followed the instructions as much as I can understand them, but like I said, I don't know much about the technical side of things - all the jargon is getting me very confused. That said, that's more about security settings and what not, I can understand the basics for plugging what in where etc, but it's just not working.

you don't say which operating system(s) are involved - so it's not easy to be specific ...
and which make/models of pc/laptop are involved
how old / which wireless

the info you need from the router is the ssid
and the wep or wap key

page 27 is the start of the wireless section

you can change the ssid (p28) to something that fits you
karenmac would be fine - and easy to spot

wep is good enough for most situations
if there is no key - set one up (p31)


make sure the mode (p29) is set to
54Mbps (802.11g) - Both 802.11g and 802.11b wireless stations can connect to the

Enable SSID Broadcast - If you select the Enable SSID Broadcast checkbox, the
Wireless Router SSID will broadcast its name (SSID) on the air

if that still doesn't work try mode
11Mbps (802.11b) - Only 802.11b wireless stations can connect to the router

in control panel there should be a wireless network setup wizard (XP) and something similar in Vista

run the wizard
display available networks (the one that matches your ssid)
then when asked enter the wep key ... and that should be it



vas why on earth would a router manual tell you how windows works ... and why would you post a link without checking that it did

in these days of bridges under the hammer, arch swap and how dirty is your bridge with prim and hagged -
the old accomodation issues don't always apply
these days it's all keeping up with the gnomes, fairy pride etc ...
